Julianne Moore portrays Dr. Catherine Stewart, a gynecologist with a successful practice. She is married to a professor. She and David (Liam Neeson) have a seemingly happy marriage and one son. Their relationship is losing some of its vitality, however, with two working professionals and not a lot of private personal time for their marriage. While they are comfortable in their marriage, their relationship lacks some of the excitement it had when they were younger.
Everything seems to be going along fine for them until one day Catherine suspects that David is cheating on her. She does not confront him. Instead, she hires a young “escort” named Chloe (Seyfried) to attempt to lure him into an affair.
Chloe the Chameleon
Chloe prides herself on being able to become whatever the other person needs. She is like a chameleon.
Chloe is to “accidentally” meet David in a diner and report back to Catherine. Catherine and Chloe have a unique bond that neither of them can explain. They get along great and as Chloe keeps meeting with Catherine to report on the various nefarious activities that are going on between David and herself, Catherine begins to feel things she cannot understand.
It is strange to see wholesome young Amanda Seyfried in this role, yet she portrays the clever Chloe with charm and delight. She makes viewers feel sorry for her character.
Neeson and Moore are wonderfully talented veteran actors who bring their experience to this film. Although the story is dark and bizarre, there is an element of suspense as viewers follow the twisted lives of these people as they try to make sense of their own sexuality and emotions.
Family Secrets Bubble to the Surface
It is pretty evident that someone is lying in this story, or maybe two people are lying. But who is it and what is the lie. What family secrets will come out? This is yet another movie that points out the fact that what you see is not always what you get. This seemingly perfectly happy family is hiding some deep emotional pain.
While this is not a fast-paced, edge-of-your-seat movie, the actors are what keep things interesting. They perform wonderfully even though the story is weak and sluggish. Amanda Seyfried is a young actor who is definitely on her way up. She is a delight to watch, in whatever role she is playing.
The DVD contains some deleted scenes and a “making of” feature.
