Flypaper – DVD Review

Patrick Dempsey and Ashley Judd star in this screwball story of a bank heist.

Flypaper is definitely an over-the-top story about a bank heist. Actually, it’s about more than one bank heist. So, why is that so crazy? Because it’s about several bank robberies that take place at the same time in the same bank. And none of the robbers had a clue there would be others there when they pulled off their heist.

Patrick Dempsey and Ashley Judd

Patrick Dempsey stars as Tripp, a very nervous man who definitely needs his meds. He is in the bank to change his money into coins, and happens to get a beautiful teller to help him. Kaitlin (Ashley Judd) realizes Tripp is odd, but what can she do? She has to change his money into coins – lots of coins.

When Tripp is finished with his transaction, he is about to leave the bank when everything goes wrong. A gun shot kills a man in the bank and there are several masked and very well-armed men taking over the bank. But there are also two bumbling men who have come to break into the ATM machines. These two groups of robbers have a face-off and the situation is tense. Tripp comes up with a plan. The heavily armed group has come to get into the vault and the two bumbling men have come for the machines. They can each do their thing without disturbing the other.

So, while the bumbling duo sets about to dynamite the ATMs, the other group goes for the vault. And everyone else in the bank is taken hostage and locked in a room. All of this occurred at a time when the system was taken off-line briefly and there is no way to contact the police. That leads everyone to wonder how they all knew about the bank being off-line.

Flypaper is a Madcap Story

Things get really crazy inside the bank as one by one people start getting killed. Who is doing the killing?

This is a really crazy story with some unconventional characters. It’s not the best roles Judd and Dempsey have ever taken. The story is whacky and there is definitely a mystery going on, but even that cannot save the movie.

Why, you might be wondering, is it called “Flypaper”? That is because, as Tripp points out, everyone has been drawn to the bank like flies to flypaper.

Okay, I admit there are a couple cute scenes, but on the whole it is not my favorite film. It’s from the writers of The Hangover, so that should give you a clue as to the craziness of the story. It was an official selection at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, however.
